INA paid tribute to Cuban cinema

Since 2012 and the signature of a cooperation agreement with ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematograficos), INA built strong relations with Cuban partners. The Institute contributed in the restoration and digitization of the historical audiovisual collection, « Noticiero ICAIC latinoamericano », made of news reels. To continue the promotion and diffusion of the collection to the general public, INA has partnered up with the Cuban Embassy to organize an evening in honour of Cuban cinema.

Historical relations between Cuba and INA

Since 2012, INA has forged important relationships in Cuba, based on the signature of a cooperation agreement with ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematograficos). The partnership aims at the digitization of the “Noticiero ICAIC latinoamericano” collection, made of 1490 news reels, shot between 1960 and 1990. Thus these archives are a major documentation regarding the Cuban Revolution. In 2011, the collection was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.

The process of digitization, being finalized, should be completed in 2020. Following its digitization the collection has been promoted and used as part of cultural events and projects: screening during the Havana Film Festival or at the MoMA To Save and Protect” Festival, creation of an episode of INA documentary serie based on archives “Mystères d’Archives”, a film co-produced with the ZDF (Germany), or a DVD edition.

As part of the “Week of Latin America and the Caribbean “ (Semaine de l’Amérique Latine et des Caraïbes), INA participated in events in honour of Cuban cinema, at the occasion of the centenary of director Santiago Álvarez birth and on the 60th anniversary of ICAIC.
